Mad Spuds Cafe

If you love potatoes, you'll love Mad Spuds in Surry Hills. From hash browns to potato cakes, baked potatoes and potato skins, you'll find potato cooked in a variety of ways here.

Looking at the menu, C and I were tempted to order baked potato and potato skins but it was a bit too early for that. So we ended up ordering breakfast instead.

I ordered the Irish Boxty and C had the Mad Pan Brekkie. Both dishes were delicious and a bit more exciting than the usual bacon and eggs. Coffee was good too.

Good cup of coffee

Love the Mr Potato Head and other potato stuff on display
Mad Pan Brekkie ($16) which is baked beans, pork sausage, poached egg and hash browns. The beans were nice and tendre and freshly cooked (not the tin kind). This would be a great breakfast for cold mornings because it has that "comfort food" quality.
Boxty which is an Irish potato pancake ($16). The boxty is that bottom layer and it's topped with spiced white sausage (it's not a typical sausage, it's actually flat like a patty), bacon, avocado and a fried egg. This would be a perfect hangover cure. It wasn't oily or greasy at all. But all the components together made for a really rich breakfast. It was delicious though, so the calories were well worth it. Dollops of apple sauce and mustard were served on the side.
This is a great cafe and I can't wait to go back for lunch and try some of the baked potatoes! Highly recommend this.
